TAHİR AMCA VE KİTAP OKUMA SAATLERİ

I had the opportunity to spend the whole day chatting with Uncle Tahir and his family, who live in the Gümüşlük neighborhood of Bodrum district in Muğla province. I was very impressed by what I learned and heard. With his permission, I would like to share this conversation with you:

“My grandfather Müfit Osman was a child when the Republic was declared. Due to his father’s job as a civil servant, he traveled around Anatolia during his childhood…” Years later, he grew up and traveled far and wide as a teacher. He would share the poems he wrote with his students. Every year during the summer months, my grandfather Müfit Osman would visit his childhood friend, a fisherman and poet, in the Gümüşlük neighborhood. One day, he fell in love with my grandmother, the most beautiful girl in the village. In those years when much could be achieved with very little means, they started fishing together. Then my father, uncles, and aunts were born. My father fell deeply in love with a beautiful girl from the same neighborhood and married my mother.

In our family, most of the time we only had a bowl of soup on our table. There were many evenings when I went to bed hungry, but we were happy. My siblings and I were very fortunate to grow up surrounded by love and affection. Now, I try to pass on what I learned from my late father and mother to my children and grandchildren.

We have reading sessions every evening.

Dear friends.

Now I’m thinking about my conversation with Uncle Tahir, who still works as a fisherman with his family. The sun is slowly setting. A voice in my heart says; perhaps it’s not the well that’s too deep for all of us, but the rope that’s too short.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

With love and respect.
