LISTENING TO WOMEN

In a letter she sent, a reader wrote that her husband never understood her and that she had started taking antidepressants. Reading her letter, I wondered why it’s so difficult to listen to women, and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.

As women seek closeness to their husbands, want to express their feelings, be understood, and share their lives, they inexplicably encounter only solution-oriented suggestions and are often not listened to by their husbands.

Because the male brain is focused on success and outcome in emotional conflicts, it can be difficult to dedicate time to the relationship. This can ultimately lead to blaming, judgmental, and intolerant behavior towards the woman.

fMRI (brain imaging) studies also confirm these results. Emotional tests show that the brains of women and men function differently during times of sadness. In women, the amygdala, located in the limbic system and responsible for managing fear, can be more severely damaged than in men during anxiety.

Scientific sources indicate that boys raised in such an environment develop into characters who weigh life in terms of its empty and full aspects, and even harbor cynical and hidden hostility, neurotic traits, towards their closest existing social relationships. In my article last week, I wanted to draw attention to the fact that the majority of the 56 million boxes of antidepressant medication prescribed in our country in 2016 were used by women.

I consider the feelings and thoughts of the women who have dedicated their time and effort to share their opinions on this matter to be very valuable in Turkey’s journey towards becoming a civilized and democratic society.

I believe that the comments, stories, and observations made will greatly enrich us in terms of forming the fundamental values of a family. I would like to share them with you in the link below.

The most important gift spouses can give each other is to listen to one another, to show trust and love, and to raise children who respect healthy living boundaries.

I believe that listening to our women is vital for a healthy society in every respect.
