UNDERSTANDING A MOTHER

In a letter she sent, a reader wrote that her husband doesn’t understand her at all, that she’s experiencing a lot of stress, and that she’s three months pregnant. Reading her letter, I wondered why it’s so difficult to understand a mother, and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.

Studies show that babies who experience stress in the womb can develop serious health problems. Moreover, these problems can arise not only before birth but also after birth.

High levels of stress hormones, found in both the mother’s blood sample and the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus after eight weeks, can have harmful effects on the baby’s brain and development. In fact, babies exposed to these negative effects may develop the following diseases later in life:

Cancer
Diabetes
Depression
Heart disease
Attention deficit
High blood pressure
Behavioral disorders

Chronic stress affects not only the baby in the womb but also the mother’s brain. fMRI (brain imaging) studies confirm these findings.

Emotional tests show that the female brain functions differently than the male brain during times of sadness. In women, the amygdala, located in the limbic system and responsible for managing sadness, anxiety, and fear, can be more severely damaged than in men during stress and anxiety. This damage can become even more risky during pregnancy.

During this very special period, as women seek closeness to their husbands, want to express their feelings, be understood, and share their lives, they are often misunderstood and not listened to by their husbands. This is because the male brain, in emotional conflicts, operates in a results- and success-oriented manner, making it difficult for men to invest time and effort in intimacy during pregnancy.
