The rates of femicide and child abuse are increasing. The biggest reason for these events, which are gaining a terrifying momentum, is the decline in human genetics, the dopamine-energetic system, and the regression or even change of the brain. I would like to share my socio-psychological thoughts on this subject with you, combining them with some data from our country.
According to a report released by the Platform to Stop Femicide, 106 women were murdered by men in the first 100 days of 2017, and 27 in November alone. Most of the murdered women were between 25 and 35 years old, and many lost their lives because they wanted a divorce. Those who survived were found to have suffered violence, rape, and torture. Furthermore, 29 children were abused at home, at school, or in dormitories. As you may recall, one of those children was an 11-year-old girl in Afyon who was taken to the hospital with abdominal pain and found to be pregnant.
Gender construction occurs during the socialization process. At this point, there are hundreds of things we need to be aware of. Because each of our stories may begin even before we are born, with the expectations of our families.
For example, the saying “a real man has a son,” the fact that being the mother of a son often elevates a young bride’s status within the family, jokes like “I think it’s a girl” made to parents, and the fact that almost all school principals are men are not uncommon occurrences, I think.
In an environment where countless messages about gender roles are present in everything from news and advertisements to TV series and entertainment programs, it can lead to distressing situations where boys’ life lessons are based on self-expression, courage, and strength, while girls’ lessons are based on obedience, docility, and “managing.” Boys whose parents say yes to everything they want may want to control their parents first, and then their spouse.
Incidentally, I would also like to point out that, according to 2017 figures, the majority of the 60 million boxes of antidepressant medication prescribed in our country were used by women.
Let’s not forget that what shapes children into conforming to certain norms from a very young age is gender-related affirmations or punishments.
